Why is it called a varistor

Varistor is a sensitive component. It is a nonlinear electronic component. Because it is sensitive to voltage, we call it "varistor". Its main function is to clamp the surge voltage. Working Principle

 

MOV has typical nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics, (used in parallel with the protected components during circuit installation) when the voltage in the circuit is normal, the impedance of MOV is infinite; but when a surge occurs, the voltage through MOV reaches At a certain value, the MOV will be turned on quickly (response time is about a few nanoseconds), so that the current passes through the front loop of important components, limiting the voltage across the piezoresistor, thereby protecting the back Important components such as thyristors, bridge rectifiers, loads, etc.
